Pilates is a method of exercise that consists of low-impact flexibility and muscular strength and endurance movements. Pilates emphasises proper postural alignment, core strength and muscle balance, and there’s a much lower chance of injury than in other exercises.
It’s great for people with certain medical conditions and for beginners and people coming back from injury. Pilates is named for its creator, Joseph Pilates, who developed the exercises in the 1920s.
At East of Eden, we have a range of Pilates classes and teachers to suit all levels. We have a dedicated reformer Pilates studio in Studio 1. The reformer machine looks like a bed with springs, a sliding carriage, ropes and pulleys, and is very versatile, offering support to beginners and people coming back from injury, however it can also be a challenging and intense workout. We also offer 7 mat based Pilates classes a week in Studio 2 which are all Open Level and suitable for any level of Pilates experience. Our teachers all have excellent training to ensure you’re doing the exercises correctly. Mat Pilates exercises are quite nuanced and require detailed understanding to achieve the most benefit.
For reformer Pilates, we advise starting with the Basics classes if you are new to the reformer or coming back to fitness after an injury. These classes stay true to the Joseph Pilates method, are slower in pace, with lots of support and encouragement. Once you have done a Basics class and are familiar with the reformer machine, if you feel ready for a greater challenge, please feel free to join one of our Open Level classes. We are running a workshop on Saturday 12th November, 3-5pm for complete beginners The Pilates Reformer machine can be an intimidating piece of equipment. This workshop is a chance to get to know how the reformer works and ensure you’re optimising your workouts in class. We will go through how to set up the machine best for your body; this depends on many factors including your posture, proportions, strength and flexibility. Throughout the workshop we’ll practice the foundation exercises that form the base of reformer classes and play with various positions from lying, kneeling and possibly even standing on the reformer. A workshop that’s ideal for both complete novices or recent converts who want more confidence. £30. Book in here. What you need to know about starting Pilates at East of Eden
As a new customer of the studio, we have 2 intro offers that will enable you to try our Pilates classes. For reformer Pilates, why not take advantage of our 4 classes for £35 special offer (20 days expiry).
We advise booking online as online bookings take priority over walk-ins, however if there is space in the class we will accommodate you. We accept cash and cards at the studio and can take payments over the phone. Please click here for a full price list.
Classes start promptly at the advertised time so please arrive in good time for your class. If there is space in the class, we will give you 5 minutes grace, however for a full class, if you are not there at the start of class, your spot may be given away to people on the waitlist.
We operate a 6 hour cancellation policy however if you let us know you will not make class and we can fill your spot, we will refund you the credit.
We have 6 toilets, 2 showers and 6 individual changing cubicles between the 2 studios. Shoes and socks are not worn in the studio and we provide shoe cubicles outside the studio door.
Please leave bags and outerwear on the hooks provided either in the storage boxes in the seating in the Studio 2 changing area or outside Studio 1. And wear comfortable clothing that you can move in.
