Yoga is an ancient practice with origins stretching back thousands of years in India. It can give you a more positive outlook on life and a sense of peace. The word ‘yoga’ itself means ‘union’ and ‘union with the divine’; however, in fairly recent times, the spirituality has been stripped away so the perception of yoga is that it’s for young, slim bendy people – mainly women.
Actually, yoga has so much more to offer than the physical practice, and can be of benefit to people of all genders, shapes, sizes, ages and abilities. At East of Eden, we pride ourselves on being welcoming to everybody, and having a class or teacher to suit everybody.
Classes for Beginners
Yoga is for everyone, and we aim to provide a supportive, encouraging environment to learn the foundations. If you are a complete beginner, we offer regular yoga basics classes which are geared specifically for people who have never done yoga before on a Tuesday 17:45 – 18:45 and a Thursday 12:30 – 13:30. We also run regular 4 weekly Beginners Yoga course – more info below – and a weekly yoga level 1 class.
Beginners Yoga Course
We will be running a regular 4 weekly beginners courseswith Ayanna Prevatt. The next one will be a level 2 beginners course running May 7th – 28th. This is a follow-on course for those who have already attended the beginners course and wish to consolidate their knowledge, or those who wish to revisit the fundamentals of yoga. We will refine the yoga postures (asanas) and sun salutations covered in the beginners course, and learn new postures, basic sequences and simple breathing practices (pranayama) each week to build strength and flexibility, reduce stress and increase wellbeing. Each session will focus on a different area of the body or type of pose so you understand what you’re doing and why. This will also help you feel more familiar with the structure of a dynamic yoga class and more confident in choosing and attending a group class.
The next complete beginners course will run in June, between 4th and 25th. This 4 week course introduces the classic body of yoga postures (asanas) and basic sequences, including sun salutations. A focus on healthy alignment principles and an introduction to breathing practices (pranayama) will help build strength, flexibility and create a foundation for your yoga practice.
In both beginners courses, students will receive personal attention from an experienced teacher week to week providing an ideal environment for learning. Building upon the core poses and working at a pace that ensures learning, students will build strength and knowledge, as well as cultivate greater mental clarity and calm.
These courses are the best way to begin your practice and discover yoga in a safe and fun space. Perfect for beginners, people who like to learn sequentially or anyone looking to revisit the fundamentals of yoga.

Can’t make the Beginners Course?
If the Beginners Course times don’t work for you, then Level 1, Open Level, Gentle Yoga or Yin/Restorative classes are the best place to start. These classes are fine for beginners and the Gentle Yoga and Yin in particular are at the gentler end of the spectrum so that beginners can integrate with ease.

As a new customer of the studio, why not take advantage of our 20 day for £35 welcome offer for Studio 2? This gives you 20 consecutive days of unlimited classes in our yoga and mat Pilates studio so is a great chance to try everything and see what teachers and classes you like best. We advise booking online as online bookings take priority over walk-ins, however if there is space in the class we will accommodate you. Classes start promptly at the advertised time so please arrive in good time for your class. If there is space in the class, we will give you 5 minutes grace, however for a full class, if you are not there at the start of class, your spot may be given away to people on the waitlist.
We operate a 6 hour cancellation policy however if you let us know you will not make class and we can fill your spot, we will refund you the credit.
We provide mats, bricks, bolsters, belts, blocks, blankets and eye bags, however you are welcome to bring your own.
We have 6 toilets, 2 showers and 6 individual changing cubicles between the 2 studios. Shoes and socks are not worn in the studio and we provide shoe cubicles outside the studio door.
Please leave bags and outerwear on the hooks provided either in the storage boxes in the seating in the Studio 2 changing area or outside Studio 1. And wear comfortable clothing that you can move in.
